Waco, Texas located on the Brazos River and is home to famous Baylor University and to the reality tv stars Chip and Joanna Gaines from the HGTV show Fixer Upper. Because of this, Waco can seem to be a thriving city and home to all community development and rehabilitation efforts. However there over 40,000 individuals living in poverty with 41% of those individuals being children and 1 of every 6 seniors also live in poverty. The poverty rate in Waco is twice the national average. Youthworks has been serving in the community since 2020 and partners with organizations that have a positive impact on the community. During the summer Youthworks helps fill the gap of volunteers being that there is a strong absence of Baylor students serving the community in the summer. Youthworks is partnering with local organizations that work directly with families and individuals that serve those experiencing homelessness and poverty, conduct kid’s programming and do minor construction and home repair projects.
